Protect and Strengthen SNAP for Our Community

We, the undersigned residents of Congressional District 6, are writing to express our deep concern regarding potential cuts or additional restrictions to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). We urge you to stand with your constituents by voting NO on any proposals that aim to reduce access to SNAP benefits or impose further barriers for those in need.

The Problem
SNAP is a lifeline for millions of Americans, including families, seniors, individuals with disabilities, and veterans. In our district, the impact of SNAP cuts would be particularly devastating. According to recent data:
- 1 in 8 households in Arizona rely on SNAP to put food on the table, and in CD6, thousands of families depend on this program as a buffer against hunger.
- Approximately 60% of SNAP participants are families with children, ensuring that kids in our district have the nutrition they need to grow and succeed in school.
- About 30% of SNAP recipients in Arizona are seniors and people with disabilities who are unable to work and rely on this critical program to meet their basic needs.

Cuts to SNAP would disproportionately harm CD6’s most vulnerable residents, including children and military families. Many military personnel and their families in our district qualify for SNAP due to low wages, despite their service to our country. This is unacceptable, and instead of cutting these benefits, we should be addressing the root causes of food insecurity in our community.

The Economic Impact on CD6
SNAP doesn’t just help struggling families—it’s also a critical driver of our local economy. Data shows that:
- Every dollar spent on SNAP generates $1.50–$1.80 in economic activity. In CD6, this means millions of dollars flowing into local grocery stores, farmers’ markets, and businesses.
- Urban and suburban areas in CD6 experience food insecurity, and SNAP ensures that families can afford groceries, which in turn supports local businesses.
- Cutting SNAP would hurt not only the families who rely on it but also small businesses in our district that count on SNAP dollars being spent in their stores.

What Action Should Be Taken?
We call on you to:
1. Vote against SNAP cuts or additional barriers such as work requirements that would make it harder for people to access the program. SNAP already includes work restrictions, and additional requirements would primarily harm those who are unable to work due to caregiving responsibilities, disabilities, or age.
2. Strengthen SNAP to address the root causes of food insecurity, including:
   - Holding large corporations accountable for paying wages so low that their employees must rely on public assistance like SNAP.
   - Supporting wage increases for military personnel and federal workers to ensure they can support their families without needing SNAP.
   - Expanding access to affordable childcare and housing to ease the financial burdens on working families in our district.

Why This Matters to CD6
SNAP is not just a safety net—it’s an investment in the health, well-being, and productivity of our community. In CD6:
- SNAP supports thousands of families, ensuring that children can focus on learning rather than hunger.
- Cuts to SNAP would increase food insecurity and poverty, forcing families to make impossible choices between paying for groceries, rent, or utilities.
- Protecting and expanding SNAP would strengthen urban and suburban communities, help working families, and boost the local economy.

We, the undersigned, respectfully urge you to prioritize the needs of CD6’s families over tax breaks for the wealthy and corporations. Voting to protect and strengthen SNAP is a vote to support the hardworking families, children, and small businesses in our district.

Why is this important?

Why is It Important?

SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) is not just a safety net; it’s a vital lifeline for millions of Americans, including many individuals and families in Congressional District 6. Here are a few reasons why protecting and strengthening SNAP is crucial:

1. Combating Food Insecurity: Food insecurity affects one in eight households in Arizona, with many families relying on SNAP to ensure they can afford nutritious meals. Without SNAP, countless families would struggle to meet their basic needs, leading to increased hunger and malnutrition.

2. Supporting Families and Children: Approximately 60% of SNAP participants are families with children. Ensuring that children have access to adequate nutrition is essential for their physical and cognitive development, which directly impacts their ability to succeed in school and life.

3. Economic Impact: SNAP is a powerful economic driver. Every dollar spent on SNAP generates $1.50–$1.80 in economic activity. This means that protecting SNAP not only helps families but also strengthens local businesses and communities by increasing consumer spending.

4. Reducing Poverty: SNAP helps lift millions of Americans out of poverty. By providing necessary nutrition assistance, SNAP enables families to allocate their limited resources more effectively, allowing them to afford other essential expenses like housing and healthcare.

5. Promoting Health and Well-being: Access to adequate nutrition is crucial for maintaining health. SNAP helps individuals and families avoid health issues related to food insecurity, which can lead to higher healthcare costs and decreased productivity.

Why Should Others Join the Campaign for Change?

1. Collective Action for a Common Cause: When individuals come together to advocate for SNAP, we amplify our voices and demonstrate to lawmakers that this issue matters to the community. Collective action creates a stronger impact and increases the likelihood of positive change.

2. Shared Responsibility: Food insecurity is a community issue that affects everyone. By supporting SNAP, we are taking a stand for our neighbors, friends, and families who may be struggling. When we advocate for policies that support the most vulnerable, we contribute to a more equitable society.

3. Economic Benefits for All: Strengthening SNAP is not just about helping those in need; it’s about enhancing the overall economy. More SNAP dollars mean more spending in local businesses, which can lead to job creation and economic growth. Everyone benefits when our community is thriving.

4. Protecting Our Values: Advocating for SNAP aligns with the values of compassion, community support, and social responsibility. By joining this campaign, individuals can show their commitment to helping those who are vulnerable and ensuring that everyone has access to basic necessities.

5. Empowering Change: Many people may not realize the significant impact SNAP has on our community. By raising awareness and mobilizing support, we can educate others and encourage them to join the fight for change. Every voice matters, and together, we can create a movement that makes a difference.

By joining this campaign for SNAP, you are taking a stand for a fundamental right—the right to food security and dignity. Together, we can make a meaningful impact in the lives of families in Congressional District 6 and beyond. Let’s unite to protect and strengthen SNAP for a healthier, more prosperous community!
